My main problem with this book is it's unrealistic. When you are facing imminent death from multiple sources, would you REALLY be concerned with the psuedo love triangle brewing around you? And the worst part is, neither of these guys are anyone you would root for. Elena, our heroine, lives in "The Pit" where the poor starve while the rich Priests in charge are surrounded by unimaginable wealth in "Soul City." The plot starts off strongly enough- she steals a crown from the palace and plans to trade for it, in order to support herself and her caretaker, Rose. The buyer is Mad Jack, described as the thug who runs things in the Pit. For reasons unbeknownst to anybody, Elena finds Mad Jack attractive. There was absolutely nothing in his description that made me understand this attraction.

Slight spoilers ahead: he betrays her to the Priests and she is taken. Along the way she is threatened with everything from slavery to rape to death. Yet she still can't take her mind off Mad Jack, thinking that he "looked sorry' that he was "forced" to betray her. So yeah, I was annoyed by this. The main plot is that the Priests want a magical stone that is located pretty far away. So they set up a Competition and force Elena to join it for them. Mad Jack enters, as do people from various kingdoms. There is a Prince who helps Elena, even though they are competitors. Mad Jack becomes obviously jealous of the attention Elena gives to the Prince. Elena, being typically oblivious, doesn't understand why Mad Jack looks angry.

It is all very tedious. The editing could use some work and the writing style isn't the best. There are MANY fight scenes but more time should've been spent on characterization.

The setting of the story is not well laid out, which almost makes the story seem like it's just being told blindly. Characters have little to no development. The pace of the story is fast. The heroine is 19 yrs old, but sounds like a typical 13 yr old who is too full of herself. Since the pace of the story is so fast, it makes the heroine seem like a fickle person. I picked up this book looking for adventure and romance, but as I mentioned, the fast pace of the story cut down details of the adventure and the romance was poorly developed. The only thing that kept me reading the book was the little pieces of the story's potentiality. Whenever I read something that I felt was the first few steps of adventurous or romantic development, the author disappoints me later on by just jumping right into the heart of the matter instead of letting the feelings build up. I would only recommend this book to people who are looking to just pass time. This book is also more for older teens, like 15-18 yr olds.
The story idea is interesting and fairly original, but the author is in need of a proofreader. Elena is daring and brave, but she's like a dog in heat, eyeing every good-looking man she encounters and fantasizing about their "golden skin". The title has it half right she's got the 'steel' part (but is clueless about what it is and how to use/develop it) but she's no maiden. The tale starts right off with an interesting escapade that captures the reader's attention, but quickly loses it as the book ponders along to its cliffhanger end. I wanted to put it down many times, but held on so I could see if it would get better in the next two installments. But I really can't force myself to read anything else by this author. There are too many good books out there to waste time on poorly written badly edited garbage. It only got one star for the story concept, and for the one truly likeable character, Mad Jack. And because there are no lower options.
Awful. Very amateur-ish writing style. Elena is too stupid to live, as evidenced by the fact that only her magic healing power keeps her alive again and again, despite her supposed innate skills at fighting. The pacing is too fast, like a first-time author wanting to hurry up and get to their "great" ideas for plot points, without taking the time to build believable characters with believable motivations. Elena continuously waffles back and forth between hating/not trusting guys and wanting to jump their bones. The writing is repetitive and overblown (omg stop talking about Mad Jack's perfect golden skin) and so, so often the characters act in totally unbelievable ways. Between the terrible writing, unbelievable characters, and typos, don't bother reading this. I wish I had bought the paperback so that I could at least return it and get my money back.
This story has the same main error that is pretty common. The issue is that the author tells you something but does not show you. We are told that Elena is a great fighter with magical understanding of weapons and fighting but she only demonstrates better than usual fighting skills a couple times. The key is to show the reader that the character is a great fighter which by action Elena plainly is not, this happens over multiple areas of the story. Next is the limitation of the conflict... the relationships make no sense. A man hires her, then betrays her, then helps her, from the start he has betrayed her to certain death, it is only due to a plot device that she is not tortured to death. She should want his guts for garters, instead she has a love interest with him... unbelievable. The book is littered with these. The premise is good the execution not so much. I therefore give this 2 stars due to poor execution. This book could have been pretty good it the author got some help from a better editor. The publishing is good with a nice jacket and not many incorrect word choices. So you cannot judge this book by its cover. Good luck finding good literature.
