Rosette A Novel of Pioneer Michigan edition by Cindy Rinaman Marsch Literature Fiction eBooks

The book opens in 1888 with Rosette’s reflection on her decision to leave her marriage two years earlier, abandon her children who are mostly grown and take the train from Michigan to Dakota Territory to live with her oldest son. This reflection written by the author, emerges from the fragment of a journal entry where Rosette has crossed out her description of her wedding day and inserts “Unholy and Unhappy bonds of marriage” and describes her feelings as “sincerely DETEST and ABHOR."

Marsch then takes us back to an earlier life, introducing the journal of Rosette Cordelia Ramsdell in September 1856. Rosette is an amazingly literate woman, school teacher and accomplished seamstress living in rural Michigan. The story follows Rosette through the courtship, marriage and births of her children and introduces us to members of her family. Marsch uses the brief excerpts from Rosette’s journal to provide authenticity to the story. Marsch presents a story consistent with the journal, which she found and translated, and continues much of the language from it, inventing facts in the story only when necessary. Confessing that she is “fascinated by books that reveal whole persons by unearthing and sometimes embellishing the primary source materials," she has offered a gift to the memory of Rosette and her family. Other than the journal, she found only scraps of information. Rosette and her husband Otis have disappeared into history.

Although I wished for a little more mystery and drama as I read the story, I admire what Marsch has accomplished and followed the story to the end. Rosette gives us an authentic picture of rural life in Michigan in the last half of the 1800’s. That makes it fascinating for those of us interested in history.

Rosette A Novel of Pioneer Michigan edition by Cindy Rinaman Marsch Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Not my cup of tea. I hoped to find more about the history of Michigan pioneering, but it's a narrow and personal account; too reserved and superficial.
A young woman's account of her soujourn in the "wildnerness" (not too wild, but by today's standards and for their middle- class Christian values at that time, yet still scary and adventurous; like extreme camping). It was OK. I was a bit shocked at her Christian holier -than -thou sentiment re Native Americans, however! She was a very opinionated young lady. It wasiInteresting to follow what they ate and how they prepared it.
This is a novel set in a time period. I liked it mostly because I worked in that are of Michigan for 20 years. I felt the story including the short story left us without finishing. The time line was on a certain pace until near the end when is sped up to finish the novel. Th time in the bad lands is of interest to me and was not covered in the detail of the Michigan years.
This is a wonderful true story taken from a real diary. What makes it amazing to me is that the modern author manages to keep the 'voice' of the past without a whiff of anachronistic writing. Truly beautiful feat of writing in a genre I very much enjoy having once lived in the heart of the prairie myself.
In Rosette, the author does a terrific job of taking us into the difficult life of the pioneers from the perspective of a young woman trying to find her way in this hardscrabble landscape. The excerpts from Rosette's actual journal make a fascinating foundation, and the author adds great detail informing the reader about the social norms of the time and the wide-ranging skills required just to survive. The writing is excellent, and I hope this is the first of many adventures that Ms. Marsch invites us to enjoy!!
No rosy nostalgia in this novel about pioneer Michigan, but an honest and realistic look at the realities of daily life. We meet Rosette in her mid-20s - a school teacher with an independent bent but whose dreams are for marriage and family. She meets and marries Otis and they begin the hard labour of building a life together, carving a farm and roads out of the forest. We read of the cold, the back-breaking work and - not often glimpsed in accounts of the time - the harsh impact of domestic labour on sensitive skin. The story is woven against the background of political events - the anti-slavery movement, the civil war, the expansion of the railroad. The characters are believable, if not always likeable - they have their flaws as well as their virtues.
I'm looking forward to the next book!
I received a copy of this book from Cindy Rinaman Marsch in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Ms. Marsch, for sharing your hard work with me!

Cindy Rinaman Marsch has done a wonderful job of fleshing out this novel around the journal entries of Rosette Cordelia Ramsdell Churchill. This is a novel you cannot put down, and it ends much too soon - I would love to be able to follow the lives of the remaining children.

The characters are complex, the details well defined and picturesque, and the time frame is spot-on. I found myself fascinated in following the trail of footnotes throughout this novel. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys history, the frontier, and early America. There are many extras offered with the purchase of this book - check them out!
