The Suicide of the Jews A Cautionary Tale Tsvi Bisk 9789655504866 Books
Bisk, an Israeli long an optimist championing the idea that Israel's future in the global economy resides in its hi-tech and scientific sector, has in the last few years become increasingly pessimistic. In his lively and very readable assessment of Israel's political culture, he argues that the rise to political dominance of theocratic power and Greater Israel land mysticism will distort public finance, cut profoundly into scientific and liberal arts educational budgets, force a brain drain from Israel, and turn it into a third world state. If Bisk indicates thereby that he is no right-winger, he makes very it very clear that he is neither of the left. Palestinian refusal to accept Israel's offers of statehood have pulled the rug from under the left. In his mind, neither a two state solution, nor a one state solution with either an Arab majority electorate, or a Jewish apartheid state, is possible. What then? Bisk offers an extraordinary but plausible speculation, making his case first, with an illuminating discussion of the various forms of Zionism, those of Herzl, of Weizmann, who hoped for an Israel promoting liberal scientific life; of labor zionists such as Sirkin and Ben Gurion; of free market Greater Israel zionists such as Jabotinsky and Begin, and many more, to indicate how a combination of misguided and anachronistic idealisms and a variety of unintended consequences, are bringing Israel into what none of the contending zionists ever imagined, a theocracy with no investment in the democratic rule of law.
But now comes a shocker, as Bisk, always the realist, unveils a quite believable prognosis, which he casts in the form of Bellamy's Looking Backwards -- that Palestinians will, for once, get their act together, and take advantage of their numbers to forge a potent political force. What certainly can result, and again, these strategic moves are speculations built on close term possibilities, is a Jewish nation drained of of its demoralized best and brightest, and moving toward suicide.
A powerful book.

The Suicide of the Jews A Cautionary Tale Tsvi Bisk 9789655504866 Books Reviews
Words of the Prophet rise out from this Cautionary Tale by Prof. Bisk. While the book sheds light on a future path that could end the Jewish State as we know it, the light unto the nations by the Jewish State, Israel, will continue to shine if the pitfalls presented are avoided. This book will make both the left and right uncomfortable and that is a good thing for the sake of all of us interested in the future of Israel. Excellent and important book!
The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.
William Butler Yeats
The lines of the poem kept coming into my mind as I read Tsvi Bisk’s latest book, which describes, with extensive historical support and up-to-date detail, the forces that could bring about the end of Israel as a Jewish State. The book’s message resonated with me on many levels. While the fate of Israel and the Jews is vitally important to me, I am also deeply concerned about what is happening politically in the United States and in Western Europe. The political parties of the far right are gaining power while the center/left struggles to make itself heard. The historically low voter turnout in the United States for the 2014 mid-term elections is one indicator of the failure of the center/left to overcome the disappointment and malaise affecting a large part of the electorate. This is the picture that Bisk paints for Israel, but it is not an isolated case. If you care about Israel, read this book. If you care about the fate of Western Democracies, read this book. If you care about the future of the human race, read this book.
Tsvi Bisk’s The Suicide of the Jews is a MUST READ of prophetic caliber for policy makers and influencing people, whether in the Israeli government or in America’s Jewish establishment and press. It is much more than “a cautionary tale,” as the subtitle suggests. It is a "J'accuse" pointed at political shallowness from the right and from the left, from politicians and from academics. It presents Jewish history within a background that sets Zionism into the perspective of modern nationalism. It denounces Muslim deeply rooted antisemitism, which continues to contaminate Western countries judging Israel’s actions with double standards. And it denounces Labor Zionism’s bankruptcy, lacking Ben Gurion’s vision, strategic focus and realpolitik. Above all, the finger is pointed at the self-defeating settler’s Messianic infatuation with land, not because their claims are immoral or illegal, but because they are foolishly endangering Jewish civilization. With all the red lights blinking on the dashboard and the GPS, the book tells us that it is time to check both the engine and the direction.
I was so impressed with this book that I immediately made a list of who I needed to tell about it. Still, I don’t recall ever before feeling as agitated and troubled upon finishing a book as I did with this one. Maybe I related so much because TSOTJ made me better understand why my own foundational feelings about Israel’s place in the world have changed so much recently. Written both for those with little background and for those who have followed Israel’s realities for a long time, The Suicide of the Jews provides a reasoned explanation of how things have gotten where they are and, potentially, how they might end up. These new insights have clarified a lot for me and also have increased my empathy for the disillusioned and sometimes alienated Israeli youth. I hope with all my heart that rather than a cautionary tale, this book becomes a guide of “What Not to Do.”
