I bought this book because I was bored, it sounded ok and it was on sale. I am so glad I bought it. It caught my attention right away and held it all the way through. The characters had substance, the plot moved along rapidly and didn't leave a minute to be bored with it. I don't do well with wordy authors...I tend to skip over pages and miss things when books are written that way. While reading this book, I can honestly say that I didn't skip a single word. I can't wait to read the next in the series. I haven't enjoyed an author this much since I finished reading the John Sanford Prey series.

I would give it 3+ because it is well formatted and the author is a good writer. I only gave it a 3 because Kate didn't seem to have feelings. Or at least I couldn't get into her personality enough. The story about the tissue contamination was not done into enough depth or detail to be interesting. I like biomedical thrillers, so I will probably read another to see how the author grows after this novice attempt. Also, I think if she spiced up the names a little, it might have been easier to keep the characters individualized. All in all, a decent novice novel. I had to read it in a difficult setting on different devices, so that my have impacted my experience.
Looking forward to reading a book set in Canada, I was very disappointed. Kate Lange as a character was annoying, all that angst and self pity was annoying, the sexual tension boring and on the whole she didn't appeal to me at all. I felt sorry for Alaska, her dog, who was left alone for much of the time because Kate was so wrapped up trying to prove to herself and the world how capable she was. I skipped to the end and won't be reading any of the others in the series.
I read Damaged earlier this year, the debut novel from attorney Patricia Callow author of the Kate Lange legal thriller series. I allotted the book four stars at the time I finished it, but was too lazy at the time to contribute a brief note about my opinion of the reading experience. So as 2017 comes to a close, I felt like adding my "2 cents' worth", primarily because I will not be following the exploits of Callow's heroine in 2018.

I enjoyed the medical element of the plot, which was plucked from today's headlines according to a interview given by the author. I also like a good legal thriller and did not mind at all that our heroine was from the legal profession. Callow is obviously a talented writer and the material was both topical and interesting. So--what's my beef? Frankly, I became increasingly irritated by the main character's physical attraction to (it seemed like) every man she met. Of course the sexual tension between the protagonist Kate and the managing partner of the law firm Randall Barrett was palpable---I especially "enjoyed" the author's point of view changing so the reader could "appreciate" how BOTH of them swooned when they were anywhere near each other.

Okay, so I found myself not really disliking, but getting ticked off by the lead character being portrayed as a slave to her female hormones. I didn't want to hear how hot her dog-sitter was, or how she was still physically attracted to her atrocious ex fiancé, let alone the reaction to Barrett. She made some pretty rookie mistakes that placed her life in jeopardy because of pride and her feelings for the male characters.

Final note, if I want to read a romance novel that has a secondary mystery-thriller theme I'll pick up a Sandra Brown or JD Robb (Nora Roberts) selection. Iris Johansen and Lisa Gardner also expertly blend sex and intrigue. This debut novel from Callow gave the reader a protagonist that found herself in some serious danger, but the thrill of the read was watered down by the heroine coming across like she just discovered that there were boys out there. There was "no there there" [i.e., sexual scenes] and this book should have stayed a debut medical-legal thriller with a strong female attorney at the center.
Was mildly interested in the storyline but when I got to page 34 I decided I had read enough of the bad language therefore I quit reading the book.
It is difficult today to find a book that does not have a lot of "padding" to bulk up the text. Superfluous scenes and conversations tend to mislead the reader. Pamela Callow uses only the most relevant, concise sentences and nothing is left but total enjoyment.
I love a book where I use the dictionary to verify or look up definitions. Ms. Callow's familiarity with the English language is impressive, but her vast vocabulary is not used to impress the reader.
Kate Lange is a young lawyer determined to climb the corporate ladder swiftly and land her dream job... as a judge. Her struggles will be interesting and varied. The characters presented in this book have such developed personalities... both admirable and disgusting, that it makes the reader want to he more about their lives... and how they impact Kate's. If you enjoy a good story that is well-written, I recommend this book.
