Sophie Young and Grace Yang are quite different. Sophie is short, blond and freckled and cares nothing about fashion but loves Chinese culture. Grace is tall, slender, of Chinese ancestry and is obsessed with fashion as well as becoming an FBI agent. When Grace convinces Sophie to spy on their neighbor, Charlotte Agford, who also happens to be Sophie's school counselor, neither expects to find much. But after getting caught and being forced to spend time with the good doctor, Sophie becomes convinced that something isn't right.

But what can two twelve-year-old girls do, especially when it seems the real FBI can't or aren't doing anything? And is Dr. Agford really hiding what they think she is hiding or is it something much less incriminating? And above all, will their friendship survive all the tension and sneaking around? Especially when Sophie makes a new friend at school.

Strengths: I appreciated how different Grace and Sophie are and yet how they balance each other out. The mystery has some entertaining twists and turns to it and the climax is definitely exciting. It's nice to read a stand-alone mystery that's different than the typical formulaic fare so common today. I also liked how the girls used real research to look for answers. The girls also had to face the consequences for some of their foolish decisions.

Weaknesses: The story isn't completely believable and the girls do some remarkable dangerous and irresponsible things, I mean sneaking into someone else's house? While their intentions are good, their choice of means aren't good ones. Kids aren't likely to care about this stuff though and the girls do face consequences for some of their choices, although not all.

This is a sweet coming of age mystery, about friendship, bravery and smart young girls. It is funny, real, and beautifully written. Like any good mystery, it is full of unexpected plot twists. I recently took it to Hawaii with me on vacation and it was so good, that I had to banish my kiddos off to the pool with my husband so I could finish it. I did not want to put it down. I recommend it for tweens and adults alike. I look forward to the sequel!
I enjoyed this YA mystery from an interesting new (to me) author. Purchased on recommendation from a friend, and looking forward to more from Kittscher.
I'm a former student of Kristen Kittscher's and I must say, this book is a must read for middle schoolers. Fast-paced and entertaining, my 9 & 11 year old cousins loved it
I've read this book myself and subsequently given copies to my friends with children. In short it's a great book. I have seen reviews that compare it to Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew. While that's accurate to a point I think it ultimately does the book a disservice as those books sometimes treated their characters and their readers a bit naively, this book does no such thing. Really solid writing and a genuinely good mystery.
The Wig in the Window is a joy to read. Written for a young audience, I nonetheless found my(much older)self swept up in the story from the start. Young and Yang are terrific characters, and the trials and resolutions of their friendship ring true. I found myself rooting for them to overcome all of the obstacles coming at them--both those of the central mystery as well as life/friendship. The mystery of the story is well paced and plotted, with some terrific twists. It is obvious that copious research went into this book--there are credible details and facts on everything from 'The Art of War' to feng shui to FBI procedures. I also hugely enjoyed the supporting characters, particularly Trista Bottoms. What a fantastic gal! I can't wait for more Young and Yang--and possibly a spinoff featuring Trista? Highly recommended for readers of all ages.
This book has so much heart and humor. It's rare to get a blend of mystery, action, and straight-up funny. And on top of that, the friendship that builds between Grace and Sophie strikes you as real, probably because Kittscher does such a great job portraying the misunderstandings and ups and downs of a real relationship between two strong-willed girls.

I would share my favorite line with you, but I don't want to spoil it for you. Although chances are you'll have your own favorite line because there are so many to choose from.
This book is wonderful for young and older readers! I'm reading it right now with my nine year old daughter, and it is the first book that she's really loved! She can't wait to move onto each chapter. It's been a joy to see her gasp at a new revelation, or laugh at some of the many funny moments, which show such an understanding of its young subjects and their world.

This is a mystery with surprising plot twists, complicated relationships among characters & a wonderful sense of humor. It's also about two smart, adventurous, complicated girls, which deserves mention.

I can't recommend it highly enough and I really feel it has propelled her onto reading more. We can't wait for the next installment!
